Reykjavík é a capital da Islândia e, pela sua posição, é também a capital mais setentrional do mundo. Durante o inverno, os dias duram quatro horas e no verão as noites não existem. A cidade situa-se a 64° 04' de latitude norte, muito perto do círculo polar ártico, numa zona rica em gêisers, no lugar mesmo onde se instalaram os primeiros colonos conduzidos por Ingólfur Arnarson. Em 1786, a associação de 302 habitantes deu origem à atual cidade.
